Common Skincare Mistakes You Might Be Making (And How to Fix Them)

As an aesthetician, I've noticed that many skin concerns aren't caused by a lack of skincare products. They're often caused by everyday habits. Skipping sunscreen. Exfoliating too often. Using too many active ingredients at once. Constantly changing products because

you're not seeing results fast enough.

These are some of the most common mistakes I see, and they can leave skin irritated, dehydrated, sensitive, or simply stuck. The good news is that most skincare mistakes are easy to fix once you know what's causing the problem.

In this article, I'll walk you through some of the habits that may be holding your skin back and explain what to do instead. Because good skincare isn't about doing more. It's about understanding what your skin needs and giving it the right support consistently.

Mistake #1: Skipping Moisturizer Because Your Skin Is Oily

One of the most common misconceptions I come across is the idea that oily skin doesn't need moisturizer. But oil and hydration are not the same thing. Your skin can be oily and dehydrated at the same time. When skin lacks water, it may produce more oil in an attempt to compensate. A good moisturizer helps support hydration and helps keep your skin barrier functioning properly.

Mistake #2: Sleeping in Makeup

Another habit that can create problems over time is sleeping in makeup. Throughout the day, your skin collects makeup, sunscreen, sweat, dirt, and environmental debris. Leaving all of that on overnight can contribute to clogged pores, irritation, and breakouts. It can also make it harder for your evening skincare products to work effectively.

Mistake #3: Over-Exfoliating Your Skin

Over-exfoliation is one of the most common issues I see. Many people assume that if a little exfoliation is good, more must be better. In reality, I often see redness, sensitivity, dehydration, and irritation caused by overusing acids, scrubs, or exfoliating treatments.

Signs You May Be Over-Exfoliating

• Persistent redness

• Stinging or burning

• Increased sensitivity

• Tight or shiny-looking skin

If these symptoms sound familiar, your skin may need less exfoliation and more barrier support.

Mistake #4: Using Too Many Active Ingredients at Once

Using multiple active ingredients together can sometimes do more harm than good. For example, combining retinol with strong exfoliating acids may be too much for some skin types. Instead of introducing several active ingredients at once, give your skin time to adjust to one before adding another. This makes it easier to identify what's helping and what's causing irritation.

Mistake #5: Treating Sunscreen as a Summer Product

Many people only think about sunscreen during summer. As an aesthetician, this is one of the habits I encourage people to rethink. UV exposure happens throughout the year. UV rays can pass through clouds and windows, which means your skin is still exposed on overcast days and while sitting near a window indoors. Using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily can help protect your skin from premature aging, dark spots, and skin cancer.

Mistake #6: Forgetting Your Neck and Chest

Another mistake I see regularly is stopping skincare at the jawline. The skin on your neck and chest is thinner than the skin on your face and often shows signs of sun damage and aging earlier. When applying skincare products and sunscreen, extend them down to your neck and chest as well.

Mistake #7: Expecting Results Too Quickly

One of the biggest skincare mistakes isn't a product mistake at all. It's expecting immediate results. Many skincare ingredients need time to work. Whether you're targeting acne, pigmentation, redness, or signs of aging, visible improvements often take weeks rather than days. If you're constantly switching products, your skin never gets the chance to respond properly.

Mistake #8: Following Every Skincare Trend

Social media can make it feel like you need a complicated routine filled with trending products. In reality, more products don't automatically mean better results. A simple routine that you use consistently is often far more effective than a complicated routine that changes every week.

Mistake #9: Picking at Your Skin

Picking at blemishes can increase inflammation, slow healing, and increase the risk of scarring or post-inflammatory pigmentation. Sometimes the best thing you can do is leave your skin alone and allow it to heal.

Mistake #10: Using Products That Don't Match Your Skin's Needs

Not every product is right for every age, skin type, or skin concern. Children and teenagers, for example, don't usually need extensive anti-aging routines. In most cases, a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen are enough. The goal isn't to use the most products. The goal is to use the right products for your skin.

The Bottom Line

Good skincare isn't about having a perfect routine. It's about building habits that support your skin consistently over time. Wear sunscreen every day. Exfoliate with care. Introduce active ingredients gradually. Give products enough time to work before deciding whether they're helping. Most importantly, don't feel pressured to follow every skincare trend you see online. Your skin doesn't need more products. It needs the right products, used consistently.
