This week, I continue from that subject by zooming in quite heavily on skin health.

How to tell for sure If you’re experiencing several of these at once—especially if it’s windy, temperature changes, or even your go-to products suddenly feel harsh—it’s time to give your barrier some extra love.

Why Skin Barriers Break (and How to Stop the Cycle)

Knowing what breaks your barrier is the first step to protecting it long-term. Here’s what tends to cause the most trouble:

  • External stressors

  • UV rays weaken collagen and deplete lipids.

  • Air pollution causes oxidative stress.

  • Weather extremes, too dry, too humid, mess with the moisture balance.

  • Blue light, smoke, and environmental toxins also chip away at barrier health.

Internal factors Chronic stress raises cortisol, which reduces your skin’s natural defense systems. Hormonal shifts (like during your period or menopause) change oil production. Aging reduces the production of ceramides, collagen, and elastin, making your skin thinner and more vulnerable.

Skincare habits that harm

  • Over-exfoliating, harsh scrubs, or hot water

  • High-pH or sulfate-based cleansers

  • Too many active ingredients (like retinol, AHAs, and vitamin C) are used together

  • Skipping moisturizer or sunscreen

It’s not always one big mistake—often, it’s the slow buildup of little things that wears your barrier down.

How to Heal Your Barrier (In 3 Simple Steps)

Healing takes intention, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. Start here:

1. Cleanse gently Swap out harsh cleansers for a creamy, soap-free formula. Look for calming ingredients like glycerin, ceramides, or hyaluronic acid. Wash with lukewarm water (not hot) and keep it to twice a day, max.

2. Add barrier-repairing serums Layer serums onto slightly damp skin. Niacinamide boosts ceramide production, hyaluronic acid draws in water, and centella asiatica (a small, herbaceous plant native to Asia) helps calm inflammation and repair damage. Ceramides are non-negotiable—your skin’s outer layer needs them to function.

3. Moisturize with the right ingredients Look for creams that mimic your skin’s natural structure: ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids in the right ratio. Apply right after cleansing while your skin is still damp for best results.

Bonus: Don’t skip SPF

Your barrier can’t recover if UV rays keep hitting it. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single day, rain or shine. Some sunscreens even contain ceramides for extra support.

Once Healed, Keep It That Way

Your skin doesn’t need perfection—it needs consistency. These tips will help keep your barrier strong:

  • Try skin cycling*

  • Alternate active treatments (like exfoliants and retinoids) with recovery nights. A basic four-day cycle might look like:- Night 1: Exfoliation- Night 2: Retinoid- Nights 3 & 4: Hydration and barrier repair- Sensitive skin? Add more recovery nights.

*Skin cycling is a method of rotating your skincare products—especially exfoliants and retinoids—on a set schedule to give your skin time to recover and repair. A common 4-night cycle includes one night of exfoliation, one night of retinoids, and two nights focused on hydration and barrier repair. This approach helps prevent irritation, strengthens your skin barrier, and improves long-term results with less risk of overdoing active ingredients.

Ease up on exfoliation Oily skin might tolerate exfoliating 2–3 times a week, but dry skin usually needs just once. Watch for signs—tightness, redness, tingling—and pull back if needed.

Keep it fragrance-free Even “natural” scents can irritate compromised skin. Choose simple, fragrance-free products with calming ingredients like panthenol, glycerin, or ceramides.

Simplify your routine Less really is more. Stick to the basics: a gentle cleanser, a barrier-friendly moisturizer, and a broad-spectrum SPF. Introduce new products slowly—one at a time with a two-week gap.
