1. Introduction
Hi, Violet Gang!
I recently realized something important. I might still be writing like an HR Coordinator. It’s no surprise since I was one for 17 years! Yeah… I actually asked ChatGPT to analyze my writing style, and it pointed out that I was way too corporate.
So, I’m turning a new leaf and writing with a more personal touch—The Nina way. I’m still getting the hang of it, but I’m learning!
My last blog post was all about simple skincare science: why less means more in 2025. If you missed it, check it out here.
Okay, let’s get into today’s topic: skincare acids—AHAs and PHAs. I’ll be using Skin Rocks Gentle Acid as an example.
The packaging is made of recyclable glass, which is a great, eco-friendly choice. If you’re unsure how to recycle it, check the brand’s website: www.skinrocks.com.
The bottle is yellow with black text. Here’s something I haven’t seen before—you can check the recommended amount right on the cap! Pretty cool.
This includes alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). It can increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun, increasing your risk of sunburn. So, I highly recommend using sunscreen and limiting sun exposure while using this product—and for at least a week afterward.
This formula is a real cocktail of exfoliating acids and conditioning ingredients, so let’s break it down.
2. My Personal Experience
You have to apply this with a reusable cotton round, which is sold separately. That’s how the brand recommends using it.
I use The Gentle Acid a few times a week in the evening. First, I cleanse my face and neck (with whatever my mood dictates that day), then I apply this. It feels like a toner—wet at first—but it absorbs super quickly!
Because it holds mandelic acid, it targets hyperpigmentation explicitly, which is precisely what I need help with. I’m in my mid-forties. The lactic acid in this formula is perfect for keeping my skin smooth. It keeps my skin hydrated and breakout-free.
I wear SPF daily anyway, but I highly recommend using sunscreen whenever you have acids in your skincare routine. Oh, and a bonus: it’s fragrance-free, which I love.
3. Product Insights
I discovered Skin Rocks Gentle Acid through Caroline Hirons, whom I love and follow religiously on Instagram. If you don’t know her, she’s one of the top skincare experts out there. She even has her own Skin Rocks app if you’re interested.
Caroline believes in science and regulations, and I totally agree. She’s also the kind of expert who can confidently say:
🗣️ “Toxic skincare doesn’t exist. Those who believe in nontoxic skincare marketing don’t know any better.”
And honestly? I AGREE.
(But hey, if you feel differently, that’s cool! I’m not here for a comment war—peace✌️.)
Key Ingredients:
Mandelic Acid – Targets hyperpigmentation for an even, radiant skin tone.
Lactic Acid – Smooths skin, minimizes fine lines and pores and boosts hydration.
Gluconolactone – A gentle PHA that exfoliates while keeping skin hydrated and protected.
Caja, Mango & Banana Extracts – A natural AHA blend that buffs away dead skin cells. (Caja comes from the Spondias mombin tree, also known as yellow mombin or hog plum.)
Panthenol & Glycerin are soothing ingredients that help prevent irritation.

4. Comparisons
Before this, I was using Trinny London skincare acids, which have a more gel-like texture. I liked that they were easy to apply with just my hands—no cotton rounds required. That said, Skin Rocks Gentle Acid doesn’t need to be rinsed off, so it’s still low maintenance.
5. Recommendations
Would I recommend this product? Yes! 🙌
If you’re looking for a high-quality exfoliating acid, Skin Rocks The Gentle Acid (150ml) is a solid choice.
Want a choice? The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution (30ml) is another great choice. (Affiliate links included!)
6. The Violet Sign Off
I trust Skin Rocks because their products genuinely improve my skin’s texture. My complexion looks brighter and less dull, and—most importantly—breakouts stay at bay. As someone who struggled with persistent acne, that means everything!
Have you tried any skincare acids? Do you think they burn your skin? Which ones do you swear by? Drop a comment below—I’d love to hear your thoughts!💜
