Hi, Violets!
If you have normal skin, you might think you don’t need to do any skincare. But balanced doesn’t mean bulletproof. Even normal skin needs consistent care to stay that way — especially as the seasons change.
After twenty years in the beauty business, I’ve landed on a skincare routine that works year-round with just a few smart seasonal tweaks. It’s simple, effective, and designed to support your skin’s natural balance.
Don’t have a normal skin type?
No worries, I have all year-round skincare routines for all skin types now!
Okay, let’s move on with the current topic.
What Is Normal Skin, Really?
“Normal” skin — also called eudermic skin (the term comes from Greek, with “eu” meaning “good” and dermic meaning “skin”) — refers to skin that’s well-balanced in terms of oil and moisture. It typically has:
Fine, barely visible pores
Smooth texture
Even tone with healthy circulation
Minimal sensitivity or blemishes
The key to maintaining this balance lies in protecting your skin’s hydrolipid film — a natural barrier made of water and oils that keeps moisture in and bacteria out.
Why Even Normal Skin Needs a Routine
There’s a common myth that normal skin doesn’t need much attention. In reality, it still faces daily stress from:
UV exposure
Pollution
Weather changes
Aging
Over time, even balanced skin can become dry, sensitive, or uneven if neglected. That’s why a simple, supportive routine is essential — not just for today, but for your skin’s future.
My 4-Step Skincare Routine for Normal Skin
Here’s the routine to follow every day, no matter the season:
1. Gentle Cleanser – Morning and Night
A non-foaming cream or gel cleanser removes dirt, oil, and sunscreen without stripping your skin. Look for ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid to help maintain hydration.
2. Lightweight Moisturizer
Use a gel or water-based moisturizer with hyaluronic acid for lightweight, non-greasy hydration. It absorbs quickly and adapts well to different temperatures.
3. Daily Sunscreen (at least SPF 30+ & reapply)
Sunscreen is non-negotiable — every day, rain or shine. Choose a broad-spectrum, non-comedogenic SPF that doesn’t clog pores or leave a heavy finish. Remember to reapply if you sweat (go for a swim).
4. Optional Serum (When Needed)
Some days, use a vitamin C serum in the morning for brightness, and on dry days, use a hydrating serum. Stick to one active ingredient at a time to avoid irritation.
Routine order: Cleanser → Serum → Moisturizer → SPF (day only)
Seasonal Skincare Tweaks
Normal skin may be low-maintenance, but it still responds to climate changes. Here's how to adjust your routine by season:
Spring
Add light exfoliation 2–3 times per week
Start using a vitamin C serum for brightness and antioxidant protection in the morning before SPF
Summer
Switch to oil-free, sweat-resistant SPF
Use gel-based moisturizers to avoid heaviness and shine
Fall
Transition to a slightly richer moisturizer
Reintroduce ceramides to strengthen the skin barrier
Use SPF
Winter
Swap gel cleansers for cream cleansers
Add a facial oil or overnight mask for deep hydration
Use SPF
Optional Extras That Boost Results
Weekly Exfoliation
Once a week, use:
AHAs (like lactic or glycolic acid) to improve texture
BHAs (like salicylic acid) for pore care
Avoid combining exfoliants or using them too often to protect my skin barrier.
Targeted Face Masks
Depending on what your skin needs:
Hydrating masks with hyaluronic acid for dry days
Clay masks to manage occasional oil or congestion
The Biggest Lesson? Keep It Simple
I used to think more products meant better skin. But the truth is, consistency beats complexity every time. You don’t need a 10-step routine to maintain healthy, glowing skin.
Normal skin thrives when you:
Stick to the basics
Make seasonal tweaks
Avoid overloading with actives
Listen to what your skin is telling you
Final Violet Thoughts
If you’ve got normal skin, consider it a gift — but one that still needs care. This minimal, flexible routine has helped many to maintain balance without overwhelm.
By focusing on support, not excess, you can keep your skin looking fresh, smooth, and healthy year-round.
